Baby Newsletter Week 23

Below is a copy of one of the weekly newsletters my friend, Heather, sent to our friends at work during my pregnancy as the BPA (Baby Personal Assistant):

Hi-ya Baby Followers:

I can only guess that my Baby Personal Assistant is undoubtedly scouring the gorgeous coasts of South Carolina to find the perfect location for my surprise destination baby shower. Or she's just on vacation. Nevertheless, she made me promise to send out the Baby Newsletter while she's away. So while I know I can't do it anywhere near as good as she has been doing, here goes:

Baby Mango:
-With his sense of movement well developed by now, baby can feel mom dance. Mama Mel is not known for her dance moves, but maybe can incorporate some chair dancing while singing in the car.
-Now that he's more than 11 inches long and weighs just over a pound, you may be able to see him squirm underneath your clothes. Daddy Mel has yet to be able to feel the little guy, but here's hoping he'll kick more in the evenings.
-Sounds that the baby's increasingly keen ears pick up are preparing him for entry into the outside world. Loud noises that become familiar now—such as the dog barking or the roar of the vacuum cleaner—probably won't faze him when he hears them outside the womb. My guess is that Daddy Mel will be doubling his efforts to ensure baby knows all the words to the University of Michigan fight song by the time he's born.

Mama Mango:
-Ankles and feet should start to swell in the coming weeks or months, especially at the end of the day. So don't be surprised when I call you from my desk for a work question instead of my usual style of stopping by. Oh and I think this means extra foot rubs are in order at home… :)

Thanks!

Baby Newsletter Week 22

Below is a copy of one of the weekly newsletters my friend, Heather, sent to our friends at work during my pregnancy as the BPA (Baby Personal Assistant):

Howdy Baby Scouts,

Baby squash:
-Baby is almost 1 pound and is actually looking like a mini newborn!
-HIS lips, eyelids, and eyebrows are becoming more distinct!
-He's developing tiny tooth buds beneath his gums!
-His eyes have formed, but his irises (the colored part of the eye) still lack pigment.
-He has the fine hair (lanugo) all over his skin and deep wrinkles on his skin… until he fattens up!
-His little pancreas is now forming!

Mama squash:
-Mama's belly is a hand magnet… very similar to a "chick magnet". She may tell you to back away from the belly!

Also- Mom and Dad finally have an official name!!! We don't get to know till the little booger is born! :-) My guess is Heather Gromley Meller…. But we'll see! :-)

Baby is also sooooo excited for the sales conference! Our goal is to see how many of the women touch her belly! Guesses?

Thanks!

It's a...

"So, do you want to find out what it is?" the ultrasound technician asked Brent and I at our 20-week checkup.

"I don't think he can wait," I said, glancing over at Brent, who was sitting next to me while I was lying on the table next to the ultrasound machine.

"OK," she said as she put the wand down on my stomach and started rattling off what we were seeing on the machine starting with the baby's head and brain.

I admit that while I was listening intently, I also was thinking, "When is she going to get to the goodies and tell us if we're having a little boy or girl?"

From day one, Brent has insisted that we were having a boy. He's rubbed my stomach and swore he could feel our little one's penis poking out, he's gravitated toward the boy's clothing whenever we're at the store, and keeps talking about what "our son" is going to be when he grows up. He's also started calling Bellybean by the name he wants to name him - a boy's name of course.

It's because of his staunch belief that we're having a boy that our parents are convinced that he's wrong, and we're obviously having a girl. When I was home for the 4th of July, I took both sets of our parents out to dinner and took a poll - do you think it's a boy or a girl? Their responses: girl, girl, girl, girl.

I have been patient with Brent, reminding him often that "Honey - it could be a girl," but this has not swayed Brent's firm belief that we are indeed going to soon be parents of a son. Therefore, I have been a bit concerned that he'd be in complete shock if the doctor told us we were having a girl. Plus, he's so convinced that we're having a boy, that he's convinced me it must be a boy.

I need a daughter, but not as much as Brent needs a son. So while I've prayed that we have a healthy baby, I'd consider the cherry on top being that it's a little boy.

"... and you said you wanted to know, right?" the technician asked.

"Yes, we do," I said.

"Well, it looks like you're having a little boy," she said.

Immediately, my attention shoots over to Brent, who bows his head, closes his eyes, and raises both of his hands in victory.

"It's a boy, honey!" I repeated to Brent, holding out my hand to him. But his eyes don't leave that ultrasound monitor as he reaches out to shake my hand and continues to sit there with an absolute look of elation and a smile to match.

"Are you sure?" I then ask the technician. I don't mean any disrespect, but I would just hate to later find out that this news was wrong after planning in my mind and with Brent for welcoming a son into this world.

"I actually saw the little penis right when I put the wand down," she said. "But some couples get so rowdy in celebration that I always save the news until the end."

Well regardless of when she told us this news, a celebration is in order.

But first things first - we find out from both the technician and the doctor that our son(!!) looks great and everything seems to be progressing perfectly.

So two phone calls are in order: our parents. But because Brent wanted to have fun with his parents, he sent the following text to his mom, who knew we had the ultrasound that could tell us the baby's gender: "Everything checked out fine (so far)! Pretty cool to see everything."

Her reply: "Sex?"

Knowing we couldn't get away with keeping that a secret, Brent then called his mom and told her that he didn't know why she ever doubted him... to which she thought he was kidding that we were having a boy and I had to intervene and tell her that he was telling the truth.

The second phone call was to my parents, who were driving back from their week at the lake, so I asked to be put on speaker so I could tell mom, dad, and Brittany the good news.

And it is good news. We're going to have a baby boy.

Baby Newsletter Week 19

Below is a copy of one of the weekly newsletters my friend, Heather, sent to our friends at work during my pregnancy as the BPA (Baby Personal Assistant):

Hello Baby Scouts!!!

Week 19! Wow time flies when we're having fun!

Baby Meltser-smeltser:
-Baby's brain is going crazy with development! Its brain now has areas for smell, taste, hearing, vision, and touch!
-Some researchers say that baby can now hear voices! So come on over and introduce yourself to it!
-Baby's arms and legs are finally the right proportions!
-Kidneys are making urine and hair is sprouting from its scalp!
-A waxy protective coating called the vernix caseosa is forming on its skin to prevent it from pickling in the amniotic fluid. -this is a super weird fact!

Mama Meltser-smeltser:
-She is achy in her lower abdomen with an occasional brief stabbing pain on one or both sides.
-With all that extra estrogen her palms are turning red! Some come on over and give a high five to the lady in red!
-Her skin may also be turning darker b/c of temporary increase in pigment… so she's also like a Dalmatian! Or… its called chloasma, "the mask of pregnancy," so don't worry when you see dark spotches on Erika's upper lip, cheeks, or forehead!

Happy fourth!
